Tube Review 2.10.11

It was a night of surprises, which was thematic of the day considering Hosni Mubarak’s speech today after everyone thought he was stepping down. There was a great comedic twist on The Big Bang Theory and an unexpected performance from a guest star on Royal Pains.

8:00The Big Bang Theory hit new heights as Leonard had to deal with a widowed rich university benefactor that wanted more than his scientific theories. Sheldon’s pressure for him to take one for the cause was hilarious and it was great to see West Wing alum Joshua Malina guesting, although briefly.

Cheating paranoia struck the ladies of Perfect Couples in the second half hour as I moved over to NBC. As I noted when it debuted the male characters are still a little bland, but the writing continues to overcome that with the fantastic performances by the female significant others. Unfortunately, the show kind of muddled through the middle as they all tried to reconcile their situations… but it was still more enjoyable to watch than most Shit My Dad Says episodes.

9:00 – I am not particularly fond of Jim Gaffigan as he usually plays some pathetic goofball sidekick on when he is guesting on a show, but on Royal Pains this week he actually played a character straight. Meanwhile, watching Evan squirm out of his fear of thunderstorms was comedy gold and it was nice to see the powers that be pushing Evan and Divya closer together once again.

10:00 – Since for some odd reason The Mentalist really is not available on demand, I flipped back over to CBS to catch the show, putting Fairly Legal on hold for later. The episode was actually rather uneventful as the bad guy was predictable and I will probably stop watching the series. The writers have pushed a huge wedge in the obvious love story of the series between Grace and Wayne with her engagement to an FBI agent, whom the show is displaying slight hints that he may be a killer.

Catching Up on Demand – After a two-month break, Raising Hope returned to air on Fox Tuesday evening. I have to admit that it was about a month ago that I came across this show and began watching it. It is a very funny comedy about a low-income family that is kind of a modern version of Married with Children in that it is very edgy comedically and represents those in the country that are struggling similar to My Name is Earl. The new episode about two young single fathers – one rich, one poor – becoming friends and their families not liking it featured a brilliantly crafted sequence in which the two grandfathers told two completely different stories but were cut together back and forth to create strange and hilarious metaphors. The reversal the show takes at its climax is fantastic.

Tape Delay – Fairly Legal will probably be the first show I catch up on since the second run airs as The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson ends. Other than that, on the agenda would be the remaining NBC comedy shows with the exception of Parks & Rec, which I have never really gotten into.
